Overheard

A 7 or 8 year old girl, along with her babysitter? mother? babysitter I think, sat behind me on the bus tonight. The little girl was trying to entertain herself by making up a guessing game that involved her thinking of a number and the woman having to guess the number by asking questions. Here is how it went down:

Girl: You have to ask me questions to get hints about the number.
Silence.
Girl: Say something, ask me a question.
Silence.
Girl: You can ask me something like is it odd or even?
Woman: Is it even?
Girl, thinking for a long minute: Yes
Woman: Is it seven?

I'm a more fun childcare worker than that.

Yesterday Oona age 6 asked me. Why do they call it babysitting? I'm not a baby.
I said, "I call it childcare. I think that is better more accurate."
She agreed.

(And I showed her The Little Rascals for the very first time.)

You are more fun. Plus, you have way more teeth than that woman had.

This is one of the funniest stories I've heard in a while. You had me laughing out loud, and my girlfriend did the same when I read it out to her. Merci, Jill!

Funny, but also so sad. This girl is trying to develop mathematical thinking, finding learning and numbers fun, and having less than zero encouragement. I sure hope she is supported at school...
