Riverhead

Circumstances took me to Riverhead this past week. There are only three trains per day that service Riverhead, so if your timing isn't just right, you might find yourself spending several hours roaming around, as I did. The gateway to the Hamptons, this town doesn't have a great reputation. Once, I stopped there to get gas and forgot to put the cap back on. After I realized that the cap had gone flying off my roof I stopped at the next station, where the attendant produced a shoebox full of gas caps for me to look through to find one that fit. Apparently I'm not the only one who's done that. That's about as exciting a tale I have to tell.

It's a fairly depressed town, with many of the Main Street storefronts sitting empty, though decorated with paintings to distract from the full blocks that have no stores at all. There is the Suffolk County Historical Society, an ice cream shoppe with homemade ice cream (yes that's where I ate lunch, duh), a pretty big library, and free windshield repair.

I've actually been through Riverhead a few times... that main drag has every kind of chain store possible...Target, Walmart, etc. I can see why the downtown died.

Lovely old buildings. I really like the movie theater.
