Day & Meyer, Murray & Young

If you weren't aware, I am here to tell you that there are no stores in the downtown area that sell tiered clippy hangers for pants or skirts. So, I had to venture uptown to Bed, Bath & Beyond for this particular closet organizational need since mine seem to have slipped between the floorboards, never to be found again. Or they are in storage and I have no idea where. Yes, I could have gone west to 6th Ave., but it has turned into such a mall I find nothing interesting to look at and generally spend too much time shopping for crap. So uptown I went. But that's not what this story is about.

On my way home, I snapped a photo of this old sign for Steel Vault Storage, thinking to myself, I wonder how much longer that will last. So many of these old, painted signs fade away, get covered over, or the buildings are torn down. This building, however, looked in good shape. I then wondered what it could become - condos with no windows, a movie studio, a department store, hmmm. Nothing seemed to fit.

To my pleasant surprise, it turns out that Day & Meyer, Murray & Young is still the same company as it was when the building was built in 1927. They don't explain their strangely punctuated name, but you can read more about them on their charming, minimalist website. And in case you don't read all the way down, their motto is also quite genteel:

Pioneering technology

A century of experience

And perfect manners

Ha! I did look in Bargain Mart on 14th and they didn't have what I wanted. But now I am all set for clippy hangers for quite a while, thanks!
